Birger Sandzén was a prolific oil painter. The Gallery staff estimates he completed over 2600 paintings in his lifetime. His smallest works were about 4 x 6 inches and the largest, a religious altar painting, over 14 x 12 feet.
Sandzén loved to paint the Kansas landscape – especially the riverbanks, stony pastures and pioneer homes. His excitement grew greatest when he was in the presence of the mighty rock formations of Colorado and the Southwest. He also enjoyed painting floral still lifes and portraits.
