Birger Sandzén, An Illustrated Biography, second edition, written by Dr. Emory Lindquist is 200 pages in length with 50 full color and 58 black and white illustrations, 11 x 8 1/2 inches. LC9223467, Cloth bound ISBN 0-7006-0575-4.
Despite gaining a prosperous international reputation as an artist–his works have appeared in more than 600 exhibitions in the United States and Europe–the European-trained artist chose to live in Lindsborg, Kansas, rather than New York, the heart of the American art world. Although Sandzén and what was then called the modern school were somewhat of an anomaly on the prairie, he did not regret living in the Midwest.
“Birger Sandzén is an amazing phenomenon in American art: a Swedish-born, Paris-trained modernist who settled in the center of the American prairie. It is marvelous to have this biography, which finally provides an in-depth account of Sandzén and his long and magnificently productive career. It is a remarkable and inspiring story, told by someone intimately involved with Sandzén and his circle.” — Henry Adams, professor of art history at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
